Friday the 13th

So, I’m not really one to go online and bitch about everything that is going on in my life, but yesterday was just to classic. It was one of those days where everything you expect to go wrong goes perfectly, and all of things you take for granted, fall apart. Sounds about right for a Friday the 13th eh?
Yesterday at the office we switched ISPs from birch telecom to our local ISP/Cable company sunflower broadband and I was deathly afraid that some of functionality, like VNC or SFTP would get all messed up. Fortunately, John our support guy over at sunflower ensured things would go smoothly and he was right. The whole office was switched over in a couple of hours leaving me exhausted from testing but pleased that the switch went so well. Nothing is better than the satisfaction of a job done right at work.
I left a little early in the afternoon and the girlfriend and I hopped into the truck and headed back to hutch to see the family one last time before she starts class later this week. It worked out well considering I had monday off due to the efforts of a great man, so we left town thinking it would be smooth sailing back home. Around Salina, which is around the 2/3 point of the trip the good ol’ F-150 lost rpms and we were left coasting down I-135. I got us over to the side of the road and called a tow truck to pick us up and drive us back to hutch, were my gear-head of a father could take a look at it. Unfortunately I got all of his tech smarts and applied them at computers instead of the at times more practical pursuit of automobiles. This is not to say that my dad is a car nut, but more that he understands them and is able to make repairs where I just stand there and yell at it. Have I mentioned I want to live somewhere with good public transit? Just making sure.
We got the truck back to my parents just in time to see my brother, dad and his friend mike pulling mike’s trailer with my brother’s jeep on it. Long story short…my family had two dead cars and another in the shop on friday the 13th. What else can you do with a story like that except laugh? The really sad part of it, I wish the network at work had crashed instead of the car breaking down….at least I can fix the network.
Dad is out working on it right now. While I have offered my services of tool getter, or flash light holder I have a feeling he doesn’t want me standing over his shoulder all afternoon. If only there was an “edit-undo” on automobiles…I’d probably be much better at fixing them then.
Until next time….courage.
