Leave it to South Dakota

Now don’t get me wrong, I love my home state and the various relatives that still reside there, but it looks like the South Dakota House of Reps and Senate are feeling a little opportunistic in regards to the recent Bush appointees on the Supreme Court. According to this NYT article the SD legislative body is preparing a bill banning all abortions in South Dakota if for not other reason than to piss off the pro-choicers (did I just make up a word?) into challenging it in court with the hope that it ends up in the supreme court. The South Dakota legislators thought is that with our current lineup of Jurors they have a chance to overturn Roe.
We live in crazy times my friends. Does anyone remember what compromise and moderation used to feel like in American politics? Because I’m sure as hell too young to remember.
Update: Well, it looks like they did it. Now all we have to do is wait and see how the lawsuits go. Don’t get me wrong; my personal stance is seemingly that of a pro-lifer. However, I don’t think it is the government’s place to legislate what people can and can’t do in this matter. So you see, I’m kind of straddling the fence on this one….I guess I’m really just one for the status quo in regards to the issue and I’m not really ready for field day this is going to cause in the ’06 elections.
