Kansas: We’ve got guns.

March 23rd, 2006 | Filed under Politics

I wasn’t going to post this, but the quote below is just too good in regards to a recently passed bill that allows for Kansans to carry concealed weapons.

“Kansans are going to be safer. Many criminals are rational human beings, and when they realize there is a good chance that they could get shot committing a violent crime, they’ll probably decide to do something else.”
-Senator Phil Journey

I would love to know what the “something else” good ol’ Phil is referring too. Now I’m not saying that we, as citizens, shouldn’t have guns. Hunting is very important tradition in my family, and the right to own rifles and shotguns for that purpose is something I would not easily give up. However, this isn’t 1856. Everyone doesn’t need to be walking around with a semi-automatic pistol in their coat pocket.

The scariest thing about the article is that Kansas was one of only a handful of states that didn’t allow concealed firearms. Wow. Kind of freaks me out that anyone with the patients to fill out some paper work can now legally walk around carrying a “piece.”

Gov. Sebelius attempted to stop the legislation with a veto, as she had done back in 2004, however the House was able to overrule her late last night. Why does America sometimes feel like we are taking two steps forward, and three-thousand steps back?

p.s. Mike has an alternate take on the recent legislation. While I agree that it may cause some people to feel safer, I just don’t know about giving more people an excuse to have hand guns. Guns are dangerous…trust me. I’ve grown up with firearms all of my life, and if there was one thing that I was taught was gun safety. While the people who acquire these permits may have to pass gun safety classes, gun safety requires constant attention and patients and is not something that most people will immediately pick up from a class. Bummer.
