Why I blog.

June 27th, 2006 | Filed under Blog, Ideas, Quotes

For anyone who has ever asked the question as to why I blog, or why they themselves should blog, this quote sums up everything I could ever say in regards to the issue.

“On my blog, I’m backing up the only part of me that can be backed up. Once I’m gone that’s what will be left is my data, that’s it.” -Lisa Williams, Bloggercon 2006 Emotional Life Session.

To put the quote in a little bit of context, I feel that she is saying that her “data” is all of the thoughts, feelings, photos, impressions, ideas and personality that she pours into her blog and that it is one of the few tangible things that will remain after you, or Lisa, or myself are gone. That is a very powerful, and empowering thing to me.

I’d love to hear your comments as to how you feel about blogging and why you do, or do not, blog. If you don’t, and you’d like to start you can begin backing up yourself for free here, or my preferred solution…hosting your own weblog with this.

Let us know if you start one so we can all join in the fun.

Update: Long time friend of the site, Jim Di Gioia, has weighed in with his thoughts in the comments and his site with the immortal phrase “blog to be infinite”. Great stuff Jim!

Update 2: Lennea has chimed in with her personal take on what blogging is. Check out the comments to read more, or to post your own thoughts!

Why blog? Why not blog? Is the earth not capable of containing an infinite number of opinions? Does there have to be a limit to critique, criticism, praise and postulation? Why should we not allow our voices to be heard and read in the medium of the masses? Let’s not fool ourselves into thinking that a blog will exist far beyond the reaches of our mortal flesh, for they may suffer a death via Error 404. Yet if an idea exists, and is released via blog, does that idea not live on in the hearts and minds of those who read it? We know not how far reaching our influences will extend, but if we don’t give them legs, if we fail to allow them an outlet, then they will extend no farther than our own frontal lobes. So, then, the question, “Why blog?” must bear the answer, “Blog to be infinite.”

    Why blog?

I blog because blogging is like a diary that occasionally (at least in my case) provides me with feedback. I can start writing an entry about an event or idea that I disagree with, and in flushing out m argument, realize that I can relate to that which I thought I opposed.

Blogging to me is like early spring grass without chiggers–its a soft, safe place for me to frolick about barefoot. Its a journal that I can share with the world, and a medium with which I can bring attention to the issues that are near to my heart.

Because it’s an out. An expression. A release. A newscast to friends. A way to reach out while reaching in. Because it records myself for myself, for comparing notes later.

Because I used to journal, but I kept losing the books. Then buying new books. Then finding the old ones.

And the blog I can’t misplace.
