Proof that life needs backups.

August 1st, 2006 | Filed under Humor, Links

Cue the Alliance to Rescue Civilization, a group that advocates a backup for humanity by way of a station on the Moon replete with DNA samples of all life on Earth, as well as a compendium of all human knowledge — the ultimate detached garage for a race of packrats. It would be run by people who, through fertility treatments and frozen human eggs and sperm, could serve as a new Adam and Eve in addition to their role as a new Noah. -NYTimes

Talk about your all-time-off-site backups. :)

Update: If you’re feeling that life is void of backups check out the Lawrence Apple Users Group meeting tonight for more info. If you want an über linux solution check out Jim’s great tutorial. I just picked up a P4 Dell (which now has ubuntu) from a friend and I plan on using Jim’s solution to backup the girlfriend’s iBook and my G4 daily.

I wonder from where the funding will come!

That should be a nice machine to house your backup functions.
Ubuntu also has some nice network file sharing protocols to connect to it on the fly.
I think I’m using Samba to create SMB shares on the Ubuntu box, which as I remember wasn’t too hard to set up, and then you can use apple + k on the mac to connect to it:
    smb://ip.of.machine/share/point

AFP wasn’t too bad either to get going using Netatalk

Just FYI if you didn’t have experience with that stuff yet.
Also, I got a new job working at the Academic Resource Center at KU, doing database and web applications, which I’m very excited about.
Hopefully will learn alot from the experience.
