Boom Town. Small Town.
So, the always lovely girlfriend and I took a trip up north to Atchison saturday for some much needed rest ‘n relaxation. The purpose of the trip was to check out the home decor Mecca of northeast Kansas, Mary Carol Garrity’s 3 stores, Nell Hill’s, Garrity’s, and Diebolts. The following is a picture of Diebolds, which is a fabric and linens store housed in an old bank. I can’t get over how beautiful the architecture of this building is, considering it is located in small town Kansas…sorry the picture sucks, I was covertly taking it without the flash.
Needless to say Atchison is lovely town, but definitely one that has seen better days. I can’t imagine the amount of growth and prosperity that was happening in the town say 100 year ago, when the mere fact that it resided on the Missouri River solidified its fortunes. Now it is just another small Kansas town with a huge Kansas skyscraper, average rural jobs and a small private college. However, Atchison does have what could be one of the cutest (yes I just used cute) 3 home decor stores I’ve ever been in….and if you know the girlfriend we’ve been in quite a few.
If you’re bored and looking for a day trip, hop on Highway 59 and take the 50 mile trek from Lawrence to Atchison. Just be sure to check out Amelia Earhart’s birthplace, the Amelia Earhart bridge and the Lewis Clark exhibit. What? Teressa let me go to a couple of things. :) Check out the whole album of photos.
