My Superbowl-less Weekend
This weekend was a whirlwind blur of family, shopping, ice skating and reasons why Teressa (the gf) is so great.
The gf’s mom and a friend came to town this weekend for some meal, shopping and family fun. We ended up heading back to Atchison to check out the Nell Hill’s collection of stores and some lunch. While we were walking though downtown Atchison, Teressa’s mom spotted a couple pairs of ice skates in the window of a second hand shop. Surprisingly the two pairs (one men’s, one women’s) fit Teressa and I (almost) perfectly and we walked away with almost new ice skates for 8 bucks total. More on this later.
After spending most of the day shopping in KC and at the Legends we returned to Lawrence for some Chipotle and KU b-ball action. Anyone who saw the game can share in my pain for another unnecessary KU loss, but there is always another game….until March that is. :)
Sunday we grabbed some Milton’s for breakfast, big shock there, and enjoyed I my favorite cup (read gallon) of coffee in addition to some b&g.
This however was all just a set up for what is really the meat of this story.
After our company had left the girlfriend and I trekked down to Best Buy to pick up the tax-return funded Samsung HDTV. I had one all picked out and we basically walked into the store pointed, swiped the ol’ card (debit actually…I paid for it instead of charging it), and drove home with my new baby. Long story short we got the TV into the house and it was DOA (dead-on-arival). The tube was broken and when we plugged it in, the power cable actually jumped off of the ground. Needless to say I was so frustrated with the process that we returned the TV around 2 o’clock and went ice skating downtown instead of messing with an exchange.
Every winter, when it gets cold enough, the fire dept. floods an of Watson Park and allow the water to freeze over and create a pretty nice artificial pond. So, with our fancy 8 dollar skates in hand we chilled out and enjoyed some time together. It was probably the best stress reliever I’ve had in months as I completely forgot about the mishap with the television, as well as stress at work and enjoyed an afternoon with my favorite person in the whole wide world. Here are some pics of our afternoon, unfortunately there are none of Teressa on the ice by herself as she isn’t the greatest skater yet, and uses me for balance. :)
We left the park and picked up our favorite chinese takeout for dinner and went home to watch a bit of the superbowl. I couldn’t help but laugh as the rain impeded the picture quality for all those new HDTVs that people had purchased. However, I was getting antsy as I had already decided that my evening would be dedicated to setting up the whole theatre with a new TV.
So, the girlfriend being the most understanding woman of all time, went back with me to Best Buy to pick up another TV to see if the first one was beginners (un)luck. They had another one in stock and this time the TV worked flawlessly. We had everything set up and running to catch the last minute of the superbowl and I didn’t feel like I missed a thing. Even when I went back to watch the commercials online nothing really stuck out…maybe the career-builder ads, but that was about it…so I didn’t feel like I missed anything.
Being that I owed Teressa one we sat down and spent the rest of the evening curled up on the coach enjoying her netflix (Prime…which appears to pretty good, but we didn’t finish it) pick of the week. Tonight however will be all macho as I have managed to dial in the free over-the-air signal for Fox and will be vegging out with some Jack Bauer 720p HDTV action. Hopefully I can get some widescreen Halo 2 action in as well, but that’s only if Gordo reads this in time.
All in all it was a great weekend and another reason why I’m absolutely head over heals with the girlfriend. She always facetiously jokes that I don’t write up enough posts about how great she is, well here’s one for you dear.
