Score one for KU’s Legal Dept.
I know I haven’t posted in forever, but the day job and life in general has been a bit hectic. We made it back to Hutch last weekend to attend a lovely wedding (congrats Adam and Amanda) as well as deliver the truck back to my folks and haul a car load up to Lawrence for my brother Steve. Not to bad for one weekend.
Anyway, the real purpose of this post is to point out that KU is taking UNL’s lead in not forwarding pre-litigation letters to students or releasing the names of students to the RIAA. Now I’m not condoning piracy, but I’m glad that KU is taking a stand against the record labels. Should the letters probably be forwarded? Yes, as it is the RIAA legal right to sue people for stealing their content. However, there is nothing I like to see more than the ol’ Alma Mater standing up and protecting the privacy of students. Here’s to giving it the ol’ College Try.

While the not forwarding is a good thing, the zero tolerance policy could get ugly quickly.

KU’s ResNet page at the time of the slashdot article had a little notice written all in red that basically said:
“If you get caught downloading copyrighted material you will loose Internet access for the rest of your time at KU. No compromises. ”
Somebody on /. then noticed that the page this was displayed on was indeed copyrighted material so that in fact everyone who had viewed that page would be subject to the termination of their Internet access.
Now they have a notice on the ResNet page that makes a little more sense, and is probably a bit more legally sound. Still, This seems like it could blow up in KU’s face real quick.

Don’t you just love it when KU shows up in the news for such outstanding work. I somehow missed the /. article, but I caught up with it on This Week in Media which pointed out the incredible amount of man power it is going to take to search through all the ResNet traffic to find the offenders. My guess is that they are going to pick people out at random because all those crazy college students are file sharing…right? :)
