Yes, I finally broke down and bought it…the slew iPod ads during the Emmys last night was the last straw in the war of attrition by Fiest. Nothing like banjo, strings, girl with cute voice, snaps…and horns. Polyphonic Spree…your influence is everywhere.

So I encourage you to check it out. 1234 by Fiest.

p.s. TVSquad is about to crack as well…I wonder how much artists are paying Apple to be in their ads. What you don’t think that’s how it works? ;)

I know I haven’t posted in forever, but the day job and life in general has been a bit hectic. We made it back to Hutch last weekend to attend a lovely wedding (congrats Adam and Amanda) as well as deliver the truck back to my folks and haul a car load up to Lawrence for my brother Steve. Not to bad for one weekend.

Anyway, the real purpose of this post is to point out that KU is taking UNL’s lead in not forwarding pre-litigation letters to students or releasing the names of students to the RIAA. Now I’m not condoning piracy, but I’m glad that KU is taking a stand against the record labels. Should the letters probably be forwarded? Yes, as it is the RIAA legal right to sue people for stealing their content. However, there is nothing I like to see more than the ol’ Alma Mater standing up and protecting the privacy of students. Here’s to giving it the ol’ College Try.

Also, here is the article from the University Daily Kansan.

My overall impression from this year’s self indulgent awards fest was that people who make good stuff, totally bucked their (perceived core) audience, and made the album that they wanted to make cleaned up the awards. Specifically John Mayer and those Dixie Chicks.

Exceptional moments from the show:

John Mayer/Corinne Bailey Rae/John Legend combo song

The Dixie Chicks (who knew the guy from Heroes was married to one)

The cute high school kids who played the classical duet…even if it got away from them a little bit ;)

James Brown memorial/Placing the cape on the microphone

The sign on Flea’s amp which read “love to ornette coleman”

Oh, and the Police reunion

Also, they gave the lifetime achievement award to Ornette Coleman…few people at/watching the Grammy’s have any idea who he is…nor do they like his music, but trust me it is brilliant. (Caution: music snob alert) Most people, including some of his contemporaries are of the impression that his music is noise. Don’t believe me? Have a listen to his most famous work. But inside that garbled mess is pure sonic genius.

p.s. One more thing, recording the show and watching it 30 minutes behind the live broadcast makes it extremely convenient to skip annoying commercials and bad performances. I promise I’ll post more soon on the new DVR setup as it worked perfectly tonight….one hint though, it’s not running XP anymore.

Wow. Just wow.

I (finally) picked up the new John Mayer album (Continuum) tonight on an always exciting trip to target. In addition to the album we purchased a bike rack for the car but it doesn’t fit. You think they’d put that kind of info on the box? Maybe?

Anyway…this album is fantastic. Different than everything else, including his trio work, yet still…John. Now, I wasn’t all that big of a fan of Heavier Things, a few tracks are good, but it just didn’t click with me so I didn’t ever buy it. So for me to run out to the store and give another studio album a chance I had to do some serious meta-convincing. But it was so worth it. It’s intimate, dynamic and all around…it. “It” being exactly what I look for in good music.

I relate to this album as 23-year-old Matt in the same way I related to Inside Wants Out as an 18-year-old punk college kid…it just fits with me right now. Stop this Train is my new anthem and Gravity alone forced me to pick my electric guitar and jam along. And yes the groves are big enough that the girlfriend has already reprimanded me for foot-stopping.*

*Just kidding she’s already asleep and I wouldn’t want to wake her. :) Have a great night everybody and until next time…courage!

p.s. Here are a few other good tracks to check out today: Beautiful Man (Lori McKenna), Better Than Bleeding (L’altra) and the World Spins Madly On (The Weepies).
